Two things about me that you likely don't care about knowing:
1) In my consulting life, I only flew Delta. Yes, I was one of those people
2) I have a small fear of commitment - mainly when it comes to buying flights.
Today, both of these converged to bite me in the behind.
Because I only used to fly Delta, I have absolutely no status with anyone else. Being a grad student on a budget, I opted to save $400 and fly American and Emirates…rather than my beloved Sky Club Alliance.
Additionally, I booked my flight in NOVEMBER. Did I know I was going on this trip since February of last year? Yes. Did I have "Buy flight to Thailand" on my list of things to do since August? Yes.
Regardless of the facts, the net of it is that I bought my flight so late and had absolutely no 'status' strings to pull that I got stuck with a middle seat. A middle seat in row 84. A middle seat in row 84 on a plane that only has 88 rows.
I thought I could reason with the gate agent. Get him to move something around. He said he was already looking for volunteers to take the next flight because they are oversold. Late on purchasing, status or not, I was lucky to even have a seat!
As a sidenote - this is a 12.5 hour flight from JkF to Dubai. That is a LOT of movie watching.
So, the logical solution is… to purchase a neck pillow.
I don't own one, so I'm going to have to purchase one from one of those little airport stands. Also, I have no room for it in my backpack… so I'm going to have to sit here with it. And maaaan I think those things are creepy! It's going to be staring me right in the face. Reminding me that I need to fix my flight-purchasing-procrastination problem.
Ultimately - I gave in. I'll let you know in 13 hours whether or not it was worth it.
Oh, and I went to the store where they were $8 more expensive just because they gave you a shopping bag to put it in. At least now it's not hanging off the side of my backpack staring me in the face.
So what did you think of the neck pillow??
ReplyDeleteso, sadly i have to eat my words... the neck pillow actually ended up being a lifesaver - i slept for almost 6 hours on that flight!
ReplyDeletethat being said, i did toss it IMMEDIATELY after getting off the plane... i couldnt have anyone seeing me with that thing :) well, even though everyone on the plane and in the airport had them...
